Laser Treatment of Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus affects an estimated 1 in 10 Americans. Infections of the nails can be caused by fungi, yeast or even molds. There are several underlying factors which may also play a role, such as diabetes, trauma, athlete’s foot, problems with the immune or circulatory systems and excessive perspiration. Whatever the cause, the symptoms are often embarrassing and sometimes even painful. Fungal nail infections usually change the appearance of the nail, giving it a yellow, green, white or brownish discoloration, as well as causing the nail to become thick and brittle.Nail infections can now be safely and effectively treated using a laser to kill the fungus. At least 80% of patients report improvement. There are no known side effects to this laser treatment, unlike some of the oral medications currently used that are often less effective and may damage the liver and kidneys. While there is often a heating sensation noted during treatment, there is no discomfort afterward and no downtime needed. Clearing will start to become apparent in about 3 months as the nail continues to grow out, with complete replacement in about 9-12 months of natural growth. The treatment itself only takes about 30 minutes, but up to 3 treatments may be necessary.
It is important that confirmation of a fungal infection is initially made by your dermatologist or primary care physician. We will be using the Nd-Yag laser which is currently undergoing FDA approval for this indictiion. Please call Renewal for a free consultation.
